Message from Bonnie - Week of June 29
Good Morning,
What a week. Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson all passed away. If you're from my generation, these three people were a part of your childhood.
Ed McMahon; Johnny Carson and "The Tonight Show," a HUGE part of our lives. Ed was right there, every night, next to Johnny, always listening, always patient, always kind. I know, and yes, always laughing at whatever was being said, whether it was funny or not. That in itself became a joke for some of us. However, Ed was an example of class, he would often express his gratitude towards sharing the stage with Johnny. I always got the feeling that Mr. McMahon felt fortunate, lucky to have crossed paths with Johnny Carson and he never lost sight of this good fortune. I think that is what I remember most about Ed McMahon, his gratitude.
Farrah; Well, we all did it, right girls? We tried to emulate the look of one of the "Angels." I spent hours and hours trying to get my hair to look just like Farrah's. My mom would not allow us to chemically color or highlight our hair. In an effort to get that Farrah highlighted streaked look I would spend hours in the sun with pure lemon juice strategically placed on my hair. I would blow dry my hair with a big round brush (this would take an hour), then use hot rollers, spray with soft hair spray, followed by a curling iron, more soft hair spray, head upside down spraying all the waves and curls into bouncy bliss, then I'd brush it all out so it looked "natural."
I was glued to every episode of "Charlie's Angels." As a young girl it was so thrilling to see Kate, Jaclyn and Farrah as characters, who were best friends, run and chase bad guys. Of course no matter what danger their characters were in, they faced it all wearing great clothes, sporting great hair, and running in high heels. Awesome.
As we all know Farrah was more than just a "hairdo." She was her parents' daughter. A creative person who wanted to be taken seriously by her professional peers. A woman who went through a divorce. A mother who felt the pain and sorrow of trying to rescue a son dealing with addiction. Eventually a courageous cancer patient who maintained her enthusiastic zest for life, her sense of humor and who cherished her family and friendships.
Michael Jackson; I remember whenever the THRILLER video would come on TV in a restaurant, a club, wherever, the hub-bub of the crowd would stop. Everyone would turn their attention and watch the amazingly entertaining video. I get nostalgic for that "shared experience." We were all so in awe of his moves, his agility, his talent. Over the years we would see the result of a man who was robbed of a childhood.
His many plastic surgeries made me question more about the character of the people who surrounded Michael Jackson, then it would his obviously distorted self image. It's not like he could have done the surgery to himself, it required nurses, a surgeon, an anesthesiologist. How could all these people cooperate to benefit financially and ultimately agree to disfigure this man? I always felt sympathy for Michael Jackson, a lonely seemingly misunderstood man.
Often a news report would remind us of the "allegations" against him. It would cause me to think, "I don't understand." I'd wonder about the safety of his own children. I wouldn't like the awful feeling of actually thinking bad things about him, or that he would mistreat his kids in any way. For all of us observing from afar it would all seem so "unusual."
I can't understand the "mother" of his children, making a conscious choice to sign away her rights to be a nurturing, guiding and important presence in their life. I question a man who would not want the mother's involvement, especially after he "chose her." We would all be concerned about the intentions of a man who would chose to have children whom he would cover with masks and veils.
I guess Michael wasn't as mysterious as the tabloids make it seem. He was obvious. An obviously sad, lonely, very talented man who was robbed of a childhood and was dealing with that loss in eccentric ways.
I hope his own children will find an emotionally healthy comforting transition through the loss of their father. I wish them some "normalcy."
Three famous people from our era passed away. They would seem to be so very different from each other but really were so much more "alike." After all, we all want to be loved, appreciated and understood.
Thanks for listening.
Best,
Bonnie

Why am I watching interminable reruns? Are you sick or just gone?
Hey Bonnie,
I like most of you outfits.
My favorite is any sexy outfit.
Robin
Hi Bonnie,
I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your show. It's fresh and positive and so great to watch someone who treats all guest with manners and respect. I also would love a copy of your teenage creed. It's the best and very worth sharing. Having your mom on for advice is a great idea. She's fun and obviously knows what she's talking about. I'm writing from Indianapolis and hope to see some new shows soon.
thanks
Nancy
Hey Bonnie!
I guess you're not coming back until you lose 10 pounds? Oh, I just checked the part of your site for tickets. Not until September! I miss you so much! Have a super summer! Love you!
Ray
Bonnie,
What a fabulous show you have! I'm a teacher and have not been able to catch your show until this summer. Even though I'm watching "reruns", I'm hooked! I've always enjoyed your movies and your appearances on several shows. One of my favorite "Bonnie scenes" is in the film Jumanji when Robin Williams' character pulls out the game board--what a riot! Your show is a breath of fresh air and so warm. I thoroughly enjoy hearing about your childhood--I, too grew up in a working class Irish Catholic family and can relate to so many of your stories. Your mother and father are fabulous parents and something we should all aspire to become. Who wouldn't want a child to grow up to be like Bonnie Hunt? Thank you for your humor but more importantly, the warmth and love that frames it. Sara
Bonnie,
I totally agree with what you said about the 3 stars we have just lost. I too, loved watching Johnny and Ed together. Ed did seem like a "class act". Farrah was an amazing person to watch. Then we have the Michael. Well, what can we say.....I think it has ALL been covered in the media. I really hope his children have a happy and healthy and blessed rest of their lives--they deserve it.
Our local station says that your show has been cancelled. That you will not be on in the fall. Say it isn't so--please. Your show is the bright spot in my day--you are not mean-spirited, nor do you do jokes at another person's expense. Love the segments of you and your mom. Have enjoyed the "bird" family also. Please tell us that you are going to continue your show. We, of course, have not had it at all this week because "they say" that NBC has pre-empted it for Wimbleton. Court room word of the day is wonderful. I thought I was the only person who noticed those little "words".
God Bless you,
Sharolyn P.
Bonnie,
I loved the teenager creed your mother gave you that you recited on the show today. I have the memory of a pea so I was unable to get it down on paper, but would love to have it. I have a son who has made great strides in the right direction, and I believe your creed would enhance his inner strength. I would be happy to purchase it if you will direct me as to how to proceed.
Your show is a delight! I simply adore your mother. I see where you get it!
Best wishes,
Sue Parker
Hey Bonnie - out of all the shows on TV yours is one of the only ones I can handle. I don't like the overtly sexual or perverted shows and you're a decent heart and it truly shows. Like the rest of your fans we are all waiting to see if you have new broadcasts or got canceled or what? These Christmas shows in June really just don't sit well here in Arizona - it's 109degrees and watching Christmas discussion seems like a misplaced after noon special or something.
Please let us know if you are coming back and when - post it on your page so we have something to look forward to!
Happy Independence Day to you and all around you. God bless you and guide you.
It is very unfortunate that these three people have passed away. I pray for their families everyday,
How much longer until you're back on with new shows? Every Monday I wait to see if it's a new episode and then get bummed you're off. It seems like forever! I need my timely Bonnie-esque commentary! Nothing on NJ Housewives! Nothing on the Bachelorette! PLEASE come back soon! We want fresh Bonnie! I want to see how big the puppy has gotten! Don't leave us hanging much longer! We miss you!!

Hi Bonnie!
I sooo want tickets to the Jonas Brothers concert!! Here's what I'm thinking...I'm from Ohio, but I'll be in CA at the end of July. Let's have a hula hoop contest! You and me. If you win then I will..hmm..clean the studio for you or buy you your favorite CD? If I win then I get tickets to the Cleveland show. Hula hooping is so fun and its a great workout!! Really, in the end we are both winners. :) Let me know your thoughts..
LOVE your show! I Tivo it every day!!
Bonnie, I appreciate your candor regarding Micheal Jackson. So often Hollywoodits can't get past the star, and admit the truth. Thanks for being you!
