November 23, 2009 -- Message From Bonnie
Good Morning,
I hope you had a restful weekend!
A few things this week: giving thanks, Oprah, and a "gratitude list"!
Can you believe it's already Thanksgiving week?! Yikes, I haven't even been able to stick to my diet, and now I "have to be polite" and eat all the great homemade Thanksgiving goodies my family goes through all the trouble to make. "Excuses be gone," you say? Okay, yes, you're right, I'll have to put the brakes on and say no to that delicious stuffing, the seven-layer salad and the pumpkin pie...
Well, maybe a little stuffing, and salad is kind of a diet food, and one piece of pie won't hurt... (yep that is what's going to happen).
We will have new shows this week -- Ree Drummond will show us a new and easy way to make a whole Thanksgiving dinner. I truly enjoyed Ree on our show, but we only had a short segment, so I'm thrilled the "Pioneer Woman" is moseying on back to our ranch so we can all learn how to make a "Whiskey Turkey." Can't wait!
Speaking of whiskey, we also have Jimmy Kimmel on this week. Jimmy is talented, kind and funny. It is always effortless and joyful to spend time with him.
Many other wonderful guests will be here; Scott Wolf, Troy Dunn ("The Locator"), also Bill Engvall, Whitney Port and the winner of "Project Runway." Since I'm going to Chicago for Thanksgiving, we'll show "encore" presentations on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, my boyfriend Gerard Butler and I enjoy a deep-fried Mars bar with deep-fry master Chicken Charlie (sounds like an episode of "Hee Haw"), and on Friday we'll re-air the informative hour we spent with Dr. Wayne Dyer.
Since this is the Thanksgiving newsletter, I would like to thank all of you. You have all been inspiring and thoughtful. I enjoy hearing all your stories and continue to be inspired by the challenges you face with grace and humor. Your support of our show keeps us on the air. I literally could not do this without you.
My staff and crew... the best-est ever staff and crew ever, that's right, best-est ever! When I have a bad day, all it takes is one of the team here to give me a smile and say, "You okay? Need anything, Bon?" and all is well.
I am brought to a humble lump in my throat at times after spending a day with this staff and crew. I know you faithful viewers know what I'm talking about, because I'm sure you can see the camaraderie, the respect, their dedication, talent and teamwork. I sound like a beer commercial, but, "I love these guys."
For those of you asking my thoughts on Oprah, well, I'm not an authority, but I've been an Oprah viewer over the years. I have fond memories of "AM Chicago," the local morning show Oprah hosted in the Eighties. I remember thinking at the time that this lady is one of us, she's earned her way to this job, she's not trying to teach or preach but instead she's learning along with us. That's how it all started.
It was refreshing, accessible and fun to relate to someone who was more "normal" on daytime, someone who represented the "everyman."
It is almost inevitable that over time and with overwhelming success that the "everyman" status would be altered. Sometimes overwhelming success doesn't change the person as much as it changes the way people react and behave toward the person with such success.
Along with success, I can only imagine that Oprah has had those expected moments of disappointment and unexpected moments of feeling alone, not trusting, and/or judged. I'm sure those times have been emotionally draining for her. Especially when people seem to find it difficult to have empathy for someone who has so much, as if she is not allowed to feel sadness, disappointment, or even to make a mistake once in awhile. She's been on that pedestal for a long time; being "up there" must feel challenging and exhausting.
I can appreciate that, not only as a "talent," but as a person, a businesswoman -- it makes sense for her to take a break after 25 years, make a change and celebrate a new adventure.
It seems that Oprah has mostly made choices to be involved and to do work and live a life that is intentionally meaningful.
As we would say in the old neighborhood, "Ya gotta respect that."
Gratitude. I don't know if any of you make a "gratitude list." It's a nice way to start a day, especially on those really tough days. Here's an example of some (I enjoy my privacy)... anyway, some of the things on my gratitude list for today (in no particular order):
Today I am grateful for:
My mom
My brothers and sisters, their spouses and all my nieces and nephews
My sweet dog, Charlie
Being blessed with work, having a job
My loyal and sometimes blatantly honest friends
Good neighbors
My garden, any garden
Cold milk
A working heater
Hot shower
A nice cup of coffee
Let's have some fun this week, and in case I don't write until after Thursday, Happy Thanksgiving.
With gratitude,
Bonnie

It's criminal that The Bonnie Hunt Show has been cancelled. Not all of us are sheep and only watch Ellen or Oprah.... Bonnie Hunt is truly an unappreciated television personality. Maybe another corporaton will show good judgment and pick up the show. Originally being from Chicago it's great to see a talk show that is truly down to earth. We Love Bonnie Hunt.
Please tell me where I can write to protest the cancellation of your show. What a mistake this is!
Bonnie, I want you to know how much I love your show. I think you are the nicest person to the people on your show. I ask
all my friends if they watch your show and if they say no, I sing your praises.
I loved you in your movies, and when I found out you had a TV Show, I started watching you. I love your mother, she reminds me of my mother. My mother died of Cancer, which I took care of her, so when I see your mother it makes me smile. It looks like you have a lot of fans, so lets hope your fans can keep your show going. I was never fond of Fox, but with you and your show I had to watch. I hope you get picked up by someone else. I thought of going to Fox and Picket them for you. I live in Portland, Maine.
What was the name of the book that shows "what looks like healthy FOOD" is equal to a buck of fries.
I thought it was fitting and wonderful that Bonnie was shown on the CBS Sunday Morning Show on their tribute to Second City - Bonnie's picture was part of those shown as a VIP from Second City - and we of course, agree that she is!! I was excited to see her and I'm just a fan - not even a family member!
Hello Bonnie,
Listen. Don't worry about your diet. You can start again after the holidays. Enjoy this time with family and friends and the love that goes into all that wonderful food. I watch your show all the time and you DO NOT look fat to me. You look healthy. There is too much focus on being thin these days. Its not writen in stone that you have to stay on the diet. Just start again in Jan. Relax and enjoy the magic of the season.
Hey Bonnie,
I have sent a friend request on facebook for the Bonnie Hunt Show and no response yet? What gives, Charlie added me easily! Maybe he saw my Mollie's photo's??
Keep on sharing with all of us! Your biggest fan-at least since I have quit smoking that is!!
Jen
My mom and her 4 beautiful daughters have been a huge fan of your show and all of your movies you have been in. I would love to see my mom get her wish and be on your show or at least meet you someday. Your Biggest Fan Linda Tyree 3523 N Galeston Ave Indpls, In. 46235
Hi Bonnie,
I was so happy to see your show was placed in a better time slot in the Phila area this year. I use to catch the show sometimes in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. I can now watch your show at 7:00 while I am eating my breakfast before I go to work. The show is funny and you have great guest. It gets my day off to a good start. It is nice to wake up to laughter than depressing news. I told all my family and friends to watch!
OMG - The day you recounted the haircut like Cheryl Tieggs story with you and your friend Maureen - I laughed so hard I was actually in tears (and I thought that was always just an expression!!) - this is my favorite talk show.
My brother worked for Oprah for 15 years;she encouraged him to get the education he wanted, and let him return after, no questions. She is a true believer in helping who she can, and tho he no longer works for her, I don't beleive he would have the continued success with life that he does without her consistent direction. My brother is not an original story, this is how she treats all her employee s, and they all feel blessed
You have no idea how much Chicagoans love claiming you....if they would air you from Chicago....we would stand even prouder And a big thqnks for sharing a great diet!
Just wondering about the winner/winners from the cruise contest. Never saw or heard about who won.
Watch your show every day and love the way you make us all laugh.
Thank you for your show and the network for keeping your show on the air. I love the part with your MON, also CHARLIE, I went two times to your show. Met CHARLIE once, he is and will always be your best friend.
Love your show, looking forward to going to see your show again.
Take care and be safe.
Arnie
Bonnie-I love your show! I set my DVR to tape everyday and watch when I get home from work. I laugh all by myself as I watch with my 6 yr old Chocolate Lab Harley. Your show is refreshing, funny, informative. Harley loves when Charlie is on as well as the puppies with Dina. Enjoy your holidays! Peace and health always!

To you and Yours a very Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving....May we all reflect on the love of our families instead of all the negatives we are having to deal with in our economy/society, etc! We can only take so much! We have to learn where to plug in to get away from it all...THUS the Bonnie Hunt Show!:)
Hi Bonnie,
I just want to thank you for having such a truly wonderful show. You are so funny and really keep me laughing without having to listen to rude remarks. I really like being entertained and for a few minutes not have to think about anything political. Thanks again for a nice clean and entertaining show. You are a beautiful person inside and out.
Dear Bonnie: I'm so grateful for your show and I arrange my schedule whenever I can to be home to watch it. My teenage granddaughter just saw your show for the first time and loved it. She said that you are so real and down to earth. You, your staff and crew have such a wonderful relationship ...like a family. And, your Mom is so much fun; you certainly get some of your ready wit from her. All of you bring such joy to others. I was also a nurse (we can never really not be) and now I teach pastoral counseling. I deal mainly with grief and loss and I really appreciate what you do for cancer research and patients.
I was glad to know that you are growing your hair to donate it. I gave mine away last year and its a wonderful feeling to know it helps someone. Unlike you, I don't look good in long hair. So, hang in there as you are probably inspiring others to do the same.
Blessing, Bev
