Shane May T. Bellefonte is a sweet Southern girl who has inherited a gift. It is an unwanted gift of seeing the past and some of the future. She fights the visions daily and feels she is learning to control them until she is pulled into the fractured life of a serial killer. At first this happens through the eyes of a small child, and then the many victims follow the child’s lead, dragging her mind through their terrible ordeals as well as their deaths. Shanie struggles to make sense of the fragmented pieces before the killer can strike again

When did you first become interested in writing?
While recovering from a stroke and carotid Artery surgery (Which after, the surgeon explained I could have died any moment. When you see a surgeon with a tear in his eye the thought crosses your mind. I think I was much closer to death than anyone has explained to me. It was ulcerated and I had been losing some vision and slept constantly. It seems it has only affected bits of my memory, I was very lucky.
What style of writing do you use most?
Thriller/ mysteries with a paranormal twist
Has your style changed from when you first began as an author?
I am more in control of story lines than I seemed to be in the first book, my next book is focused on one event rather than several.
In what way do you usually put down your ideas first?
Longhand
What made you choose that medium?
I had always had an interest in the paranormal. I began writing to fill time and in the process my fiancé and my mother became interested so I wrote to keep them intrigued. When I wrote “The End”, they began to push me to get published.
Shanie didn’t like bugs but she felt they always were attracted to her because spirits hung around her. She encountered spiders everywhere and Shanie hated it so much that it made her teeth hurt. If there was a bee, it was by Shanie. If there was a moth or beetle bug it was by her. Flies weren’t around much and she was glad because she hated them. That meant someone from the other side was there in full force and things weren’t going to be pretty. The aroma of ghosts and spirits

Do your ideas come from life or imagination?
That’s a hard question. Mostly imagination. There are bits and pieces from some of the story that were brought to light in my life over the years. I took what I had and ran with it creating a whole new story.
How do you choose your characters, if fact, how do you choose the subject?
The subject was easy. The characters seemed to just fall into place as I wrote. I thought of what was going to happen and then I gave the people involved a personality, a name and then injected them into the story line.
Who is your favourite author?
That’s an interesting question; I don’t remember much of anything that I have read over the years. I don’t believe I remember one story in its entirety. I remember bit’s of Laura Engals, The Chantaberry Tales and bits from Stephen King (Although I may be influenced by movies that his books have inspired.) I remember the illustrations in Beatrix Potter books and Peter Pan. That’s it. To say” favorite” author?
I have met a few on Myspace, Twitter and Facebook that I adore. I’m sure more than they know. Others I have met, I have not explored very much but I figure they were led to my site for a reason and I will pay attention.
I seem to think I have met Toni Andrews somewhere and I admire her work. She thinks we have met too, but she doesn’t remember where either.
Harry Shannon is a plethora of information and a genius. Poet John Hirsh is an amazing man as well as poet.
I enjoy Sylvia Browne, John Edward, James Von Praagh and Allison DubBois. They all have a place in my thoughts as I write.
My children write. I admire them in a huge way. Jonathan is 12 and has been working on his first book. He’s into sci-fi and history. He is very good at writing a history not seen by others. My son Joshua writes music and poetry. He has an amazing ability to wrench your heart. I hope they continue.
What is your favourite piece of work by yourself?
Well, I wrote a poem for my family. It is also for my youngest brother who passed away when he was 24. It’s to long for this interview, but you can view it at www.myspace.com/coostreehouse It is entitled “Bobby; His Last Letter.”
Shanie lay asleep not knowing it was 2a.m. and that the bells were ringing in the distance as they had done before. One ring, two rings, three rings and four. She was dreaming and talking aloud as the bells continued five, six, seven rings and then eight. As the last bell tolled she swirled around in her bed while she seemed to be falling into a big well. Falling deeper and deeper with no end in sight as voices seemed to be directing her and she kept telling them “There’s no where to go but down!”

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?
It should take me six months but it takes a lot longer when you have a busy family. We have conquered cancer with my mother which took two years, my illness kept me in bed a lot (for two years). My oldest son was in a bad car accident and needed time for healing my fiancés brother died, my aunt had a serious stroke and I’m sure there are things I’m forgetting. All in all, the new novel which I am almost finished with has taken me a lot less time than two years and that was accomplished while getting the first published.
How well do you take criticism?
Very well! There are people whom I know and who I don’t know that have expressed to me that they will not read my book for various reasons. I explain that’s just fine. Everyone has their own personal interest. How each individual feels about my book is just that, very individual. If it shows up in print that someone hated it? Well I still got the review, didn’t I? LOL
What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?
I go on the internet or go do things with my family. It usually doesn’t take long to get the creative juices flowing.
How do you know something is ‘finished’? Is it easy to walk away?
So far I seem to have the plots for about 5 novels including my first one. I know what’s going to happen long before the end. It seems the beginning to the final chapter just flows on the paper. It’s easy to go on to the next it’s when it’s half written in your mind.
Have you had been published?
Yes. “ 541 Hucklebee Hound.” published by Publish America. It was only a way to get my work out there in a shorter time span. I did not send it to any other publishers because I had tried with a children’s book. I wrote “Tall tales” and that was never published. It is a good children’s book. I didn’t have an in to get the right publishers to look at it. “ 541 Hucklebee Hound” is so many things, not just paranormal. It’s serial killers, history of southern living, mentions of local and state monuments, a love story, sexual encounter, religion and there is even a moral to the story. I loved writing it. It was important to use it as a tool and move on to the next book. I had it professionally edited and many people read it before it went to them because I knew how it would go.
The house was small and white desperately needing a paint job and the roof was missing shingles. She could hear a radio playing inside the house as a preacher carried on blurting out in his deep southern accent, “The wicked lives we lead, if not changed to the following of the Lord, it will come to be, the end. Our souls plunged into the depths of hell we will go. Amen my brother!” The boy bounced the ball and listened to the preacher muffled by the sound of two women talking.

Have you any publications planned for the future?
Yes. I’m looking into writing some articles for various magazines. We’ll see how that goes.
I am currently working on a novel called “Farmer”. It is about 8 brothers from Roscoe, Minnesota. The main character is the oldest brother, Del Farmer. They grow up and all move away except for 2. One lives with his parents as he has SCS (Stearns county Syndrome). The other has built a farm on his parent’s land a few miles away.
Their parents are murdered and the family money is taken from the wall safe. The boys all come home and when they talk they decide to stay and do some detectives work themselves.
It reaches back in time to the 60’s 70’s and 80’s telling stories of their bonds with each other as well as their trials and tribulations. I have added a bit of paranormal twist to make it interesting. Each brother is so unique in his own way that they all have secrets to be revealed. Then to find out who murdered mom and dad will certainly shock everyone. I am almost done with the first draft and will be editing soon.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue writing. My next novel (after Farmer) is already in the works. I’m nine chapters in and all the foot work and studying is completed. The title is “Miss Tanny”. A 92 year old woman believes she has had past lives. She has never told a soul what she believes to be. A young boy’s mother dies and his father sends him to Old Newfound Gap to live for the summer with his aunt and her husband (who happens to be the grandchild of Miss Tanny). The two spend the summer together and they go trough their quiet days at the vineyard with miss Tanny telling him stories of her past lives.
At some point I would love to write a cookbook and more children’s books.
What advice would you give new authors?
Do not stop till you write “The End”. Do not despair and never give up! By Laura Elizabeth
A couple of times Shanie saw people in a misty form but she could not make them out. Most of the time they frightened her, and she would not go back to the places where these visions occurred, like courthouses, jails, prisons, churches or even funeral parlors or cemeteries Shanie tried to stay clear of them. Sometimes returning to the misty scene could not be helped, such as when her grandmother died. She went to the funeral home with her family and at first there was nothing out of the ordinary.

Have you done any courses to help you?
I have taken every bit of advice I possibly can.
I have taken every direction from my mother (Mary Phillips) and my fiance’ (Stephen R. Childers), my oldest brother (Mike Phillips) and his wife (Nancy) that they will give. I hope to enrich myself along the way but as for courses? No.
What do you do to market your work?
I use interent sites (Myspace, Twitter, facebook, linkedin, twittermoms, yahoo360) I hand out business cards, put up flyers, do alot of talking and rely on anything I can get my publisher to do.
Do you use social networking in your day to day life? (If so please add a couple of your addresses for people to follow you on)
MySpace
Twitter
Yahoo
Are you interested in collaborating with artists, (short stories with their images)?
At this point I had not thought about it, I guess I’m always open, if I’m not in the middle of something else.
Have you got hobbies?
Writing, movies, watching videos, walking, cooking, crafts and site seeing, going to the beach, history, Ghost shows, paranormal, hiking in the mountains.
Where are you based?
Asheville area of North Carolina
